Introduction to the Agriculture Industry

Teacher: Mr. Richardson, Room #173A

Course Description: Students will be learn the components of the agriculture industry, the influence of agriculture in our lives, and the types of job and career opportunities available in the agriculture industry. Students will develop communication and leadership skills.

Tentative Schedule: Schedule subject to change at teachers’ discretion
1st week Acquaintance, Syllabus, Information sheet, FFA introduction

FFA (4-5 weeks)

FFA History, FFA Opportunities, Degrees and Awards, Officers and opening ceremonies, Career Development Events, Chapter involvement, Section, State, and National involvement

Agricultural Literacy (3-5 weeks)

History/Importance to Society, Determine Trends/Agricultural Agencies
Agricultural Issues, Sustainable Agriculture

Crops (4-5 weeks)

Corn, Soybeans, Wheat & Other Crops – (Barley, Sorghum, Rice, Oats, Cotton,
etc.), Production methods, Crop Products

Parliamentarian Procedure ( 2-3 weeks)

How to conduct a meeting effectively, Benefits, Meeting Procedures/Motions

SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) ( 3-5 weeks)

Structure and purpose, Planning and developing, Complete SAE record book

Ag Mechanics (5-6 weeks)

Shop SAFETY, Tools and Equipment, Welding, Fabricating

Animal Science (3-4 weeks)

Breeds of Animals, Importance/ Purpose, Management and Evaluation

Environmental Science (4-5 weeks)

Natural Resources, Habitats, Forestry, Wildlife

Materials:
Pen or Pencil
3-ring binder (1” or bigger)
Paper/notebook (to be placed in binder)

Grading: Assignments 20 - 50 pts. each (Classroom Material/Lab Exercises)
Work Ethic 10 pts. (Calculated weekly)
Quizzes 10 - 20 pts. each (Classroom Material/Lab Exercises)
Tests 100 pts. (6-8 tests)

Assignments/Projects will be graded and returned as they are completed. Work Ethic grade will be calculated weekly and will encompass Safety, Effort, Attitude and Efficiency. Quizzes will be announced in most cases, but I reserve the right to give a quiz unannounced. Tests will be announced with a class period prior to review in class.

Late assignments will be deducted a letter grade for each day, exception must talk to me and have my approval. If you have any questions about your grade or an assignment come talk to me. I will make time to help anyone who needs it.

Safety: The Shop is no place for HORSEPLAY. Anyone who cannot abide by this rule will have their shop privileges removed for the extent of the year. I like to have fun, but fun has its place. Safety Glasses are required at all times in the shop.

Classroom Rules: All rules in the Maroa-Forsyth Student Handbook apply. Any rules above and beyond the handbook are set forth by Mr. Richardson.

FFA Activities: I encourage all of you to join FFA. By joining you are opening yourself up to numerous opportunities to develop yourself! Activities associated with FFA are field trips, camps, awards, fundraising activities and the list goes on.
