Physical Science Applications in Agriculture

Teacher: Mr. Richardson, Room # 173A

Course Description: This course reinforces and extends students’ understanding of science and the scientific process by associating scientific principles and concepts with relevant applications in agriculture. Students will examine the underlying science principles explaining or controlling those applications. This course will require the application of science and mathematics to applications/processes in agriculture.

Tentative Schedule: Schedule subject to change at teachers’ discretion.
1st week Acquaintance, Syllabus, Information Sheet, FFA Introduction

Tools and Methods of Scientific Investigation in Agriscience (3-4 weeks)

Linear and Nonlinear Relationships, Dimensional Analysis, Graphic Interpretation
of Data

Environmental/Natural Resource System (6-7 weeks)

Soils, Bulk Density of Soils, Testing Soil pH, Sedimentations Test of Texture
Observing Limestone Reactions, Surface Drainage, Erosion, Soil – Water
Relationships, Water Quality

Agricultural Processing (5-6 weeks)

Algin Worms, Pressure and Boiling Point, Rapid Chilling of Meat Products, Solid Food Rheology

Agricultural Structural Systems (8-9 weeks)

Heat Transfer: Cost of heating versus cost of insulation, Construction Materials
Force: Tension, Compression, Shear, and Torsion, Psychrometrics, Loads and
Loading, Heat Treatment, Thermal Conductivity, Thermal Expansion, and
Distortion


Agricultural Power Systems (8-10 weeks)

Mechanical Power Transmission, Hydraulic Power Transmission, Circuits
Pressure-Volume Relationships, Lubricating Oil, Viscosity Oils, Solar Energy


Grading: Assignments 20-50 pts. each (Classroom Material/Lab Exercises)
Work Ethic 10 pts. (Calculated weekl)
Quizzes 10-20 pts. each (Classroom Material/Lab Exercises)
Tests 100 pts. (6-8 tests)

Assignments/Projects will be graded and returned as they are completed. Work Ethic grade will be calculated weekly and will encompass Safety, Effort, Attitude and Efficiency. Quizzes will be announced in most cases, but I reserve the right to give a quiz unannounced. Tests will be announced with a class period prior to review in class.

Late assignments will be deducted a letter grade for each day, exception must talk to me and have my approval. If you have any questions about your grade or an assignment come talk to me. I will make time to help anyone who needs it.

Safety: The Shop is no place for HORSEPLAY. Anyone who cannot abide by this rule will have their shop privileges removed for the extent of the year. I like to have fun, but fun has its place. Safety Glasses are required at all times in the shop.

Classroom Rules: All rules in the Maroa-Forsyth Student Handbook apply. Any rules above and beyond the handbook are set forth by Mr. Richardson.

FFA Activities: I encourage all of you to join FFA. By joining you are opening yourself up to numerous opportunities to develop yourself! Activities associated with FFA are field trips, camps, awards, fundraising activities and the list goes on.
